Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced that the Biden administration will reveal a new border security plan to handle an expected surge of migrants after pandemic-era immigration restrictions lift on May 11. Republican lawmakers have criticized the administration’s handling of the border, with Sen. Roger Marshall even filing a vote of no confidence resolution against Mayorkas. Illegal border crossings are expected to increase significantly once pandemic-era rules on immigration expire, most notably Title 42. The department is considering a new rule to more easily deny asylum claims and is preparing for additional bed space in migrant facilities.
