ADIT stamp is a temporary proof of permanent residency that is placed in a foreign national’s passport or an I-94 Arrival/Departure Record by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or Customs Border Protection (CBP) officer. The stamp indicates that the individual has been approved for permanent residency and is authorized to live and work in the United States while they wait for their permanent resident card to be produced and delivered. Traditionally, an ADIT stamp was obtained by contacting the USCIS to schedule an appointment at a local USCIS office and appearing in person to receive the stamp. According to the new program, USCIS will mail applicants an ADIT stamp, valid for one year, with the applicant’s picture on Form I-94. The process in Boston requires the applicant or their Attorney to contact the Contact Center and indicate the request is for an ADIT stamp and request to speak with a Tier 2 USCIS officer. The Contact Center will then notify the Field Office, which will create an SRMT request, and the Field Office will then issue Form I-94 with the ADIT stamp. The program will be implemented on a nationwide basis but for now, it only came into effect in Boston. USCIS has not provided guidance on when further implementation in other USCIS offices will occur.
