EB-2 National Interest Waiver (NIW):
Some applicants may be eligible for a National Interest Waiver (NIW) to request that the Labor Certification to be waived because it is in the interest of the United States. The statute does not define the jobs that qualify for a national interest waiver, however, NIWs are usually granted to those who have contributed to their field significantly, and whose employment in the United States would greatly benefit the nation. The most common examples are researchers and academicians. An applicant seeking a national interest waiver may self-petition, meaning he does not need an employer to sponsor him.
