USCIS has updated its guidance on eligibility for optional practical training (OPT) extensions for STEM students. The updates clarify that students can count one online class or three credits per academic session towards their full course of study if no physical attendance is required. Additionally, students are allowed to transfer between ICE-certified schools at the same or different educational levels. During the 60-day grace period following post-completion OPT, students may change education levels, transfer schools, or apply for a change in status with USCIS. The guidance also confirms that graduates from associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral programs are eligible for post-completion OPT. Furthermore, the timeframe for applying for STEM OPT extensions has been clarified, along with other technical corrections. Lastly, students participating in study abroad programs can remain active in SEVIS if the program lasts less than five months; otherwise, they will need a new Form I-20 for longer programs.
